tuwing tag-araw ng aking kabataan...

the rice crops sown during the rainy season is now ready for harvest, and this signals the start of "tag-araw". what unfolds during the rainy season is equally exciting with what transpires during the summer season. aside from the reaping of rice crops, there is also the hunt for "kurukya", the bathing at the creeks and the religious activities of the barrio.

they call it "gi-ik", process wherein the rice hays with the rice grains will pass through a thresher machine to separate the hays to the rice grains. and what excites me during this process is when the thresher machine blows out the hays into the air forming a projectile and eventually one by one falling to the ground forming a mountain of hays, it becomes even more exciting when the "gi-ik" is finish, my playmates would rush to the mountain of hays and trying our very best to reach the top of the hay first. some would joggle, some would free fall from the top and roll over the hays. and after, one by one would be sweating and start to itch from head to foot because of the hay dusts. after a while, may darating na kalabaw, hila ang kariton and this would signal that playtime is enough because the farmer would take the hays and bring somewhere to stack and stock the hays for the cows and carabaos future diet. para may makain ang mga hayop sa oras ng lalong tag-init, mga panahong walang magapas na damo kaya ginikan ang ipakakain sa kanila.

kung tag-ulan ay pamimingwit ng palaka ang aking libangan, summer comes, we look and find for antlions, doodlebug and some call it sand dragon, sa tagalog "kurukya". its just easy to spot for a kurukya, you looked for a fine soil and sand mixture in your backyard, or sometimes it is abundant in between the roots of big trees like camachile and sampaloc. kapag nakakita ka ng mga hukay sa lupa na ang korte ay funnel (embudo) yun na yun. then you get a strand of hair and an ant. if the frogs love worms, the kurukya love ants. if you dropped the hair strand with the ant on the end it will definitely get notice by the antlion, may huli ka na. and if you do not have the time to make the "pa-in", just use your mouth, aim your mouth to the hole and keep blowing, until the antlion appears and within your catch. antlions cannot be eaten, its not edible like the frogs, we just collect them and watch their movement in our own palms, and take note, iisa lang ang usad nila, laging paatras. if our trip for antlions are finish, we would release them again and the next antlion catching day is set....

in our barrio there are two nearby creeks, sometimes fish are abundant and sometimes it is not even filled with rain water, it dries easily. but many times it has enough water to accommodate children like me for a quick bathe together with the carabaos.

of the most essential scenes during my childhood in summer are my religious activities and involvements. there is the station of the cross during lenten season, ipamimigay ang lahat ng 14 stations of the cross sa mga bahay-bahay in the morning and we will collect it during the afternoon and sometimes the morning of the next day. we have our own parts to read during the prayer and if i remember the response right, "dahil sa kanyang paghihirap at pagkamatay sa krus tinamo mo ang aming kaligtasan". at the time i was still a child, the very reason i am joining is simply because of the "pameryenda" of the household, pero hindi laging sagana, minsan butata kahit tubig na malamig wala... hahahaha. if i look back now on the motive i smile to myself, ganun pala ako kababaw. but i became sociable, i became prayerful, i have learned how to mingle and i have practice my reading skills, kasi naman paulit-ulit mo babasahin yung mga dasal...

truly a worth remembering scenes and memories and still a lot there....

tuwing tag-ulan ng aking kabataan...

hindi ko alam kung bakit hanggang sa ngayon ay malinaw na malinaw ang mga ala-ala ng aking kabataan, ang bawat saya, bawat luha at bawat lungkot nito, and i would say those memories made me a better person, a different person to this day and age.

rainy season has a lot of to tell of my childhood, although i have to admit that rainy season makes me sad and i do not want this time of the year at hindi ko alam kung bakit.... pero aminado din ako na halos ang saya ng aking kabataan ay nagaganap tuwing sasapit ang tag-ulan. what unfolds during my rainy season...well madami...paliligo sa ulan, pagtatampisaw sa putik na nilinang ng araro at kalabaw at ang pamimingwit ng palakang totoo, we would call those frogs that can be eaten as palakang totoo and palakang araneta, those frogs that are not edible and the skin are rough, sila yung lumalaki kapag hinampas hampas mo sa likod.

they say that the first rain in the rainy season is helpful to those that suffers from "bungang araw", nakagagaling daw. i would remember escaping from the eyes of my mom just to bathe in the rain, tatapat sa alulod ng bahay kung saan ipon at malakas ang tulo ng tubig ulan. my parents are proud farmers, we have a small parcel of land dedicated to sowing rice crops, excited ako kapag taniman season because i get to experience how it was to be a farmer and a child at the same time, nakikitanim sa mga bihasang manananim at buong layang nagtatampisaw sa putikan, i enjoy listening to the "hagoks" of the rice planters, the purpose of the "hagok" is to make the planters move at the same time and makes them plant fast and in full motion, for me its entertaining.

another thing that excites me during rainy season is the pamimingwit ng palaka. it would start with making the "pamingwit", small, tiny wooden pole(usually a kawayan) with a string (usually a used string of a feed mill sack) attached to the other end of the pole with the length of the string from your feet up to the shoulder. kapag may pamingwit na, handa nang gumawa ng pa'in. nuong panahon namin ang ginagawa naming pa'in ay mga malalaki at matatabang bulate sa aming likuran na inaagusan ng dumi ng aming mga alagang baboy, its also a gift to spot a good spot in the backyard to find an area where there are a lot of "bulate". tuwang tuwa kami ng aking mga kalaro kapag sa isang arungkal pa lang ng lupa ay lilitaw na ang mga nagtatabaang bulate, nagkikinsot at wari nagsasabing wag mo akong gawing pa'in.

kukuha kami ng lumang walis tingting, kukuha kami nang isang dulo nito at gagawing karayom upang tuhugin ang mga bulate, 3 to 5 worms would make a good pa'in. syempre kung may pamingwit na, dapat may salok, usually made of fish net or small sack that would contain the catched frogs. pamimingwit ng palaka is so exciting, its a process, its pure joy in the heart...

there was one time, i was in a pamimingwit session, i was so excited because my pamingwit is so heavy and its moving, i thought i had a good catch, a bull frog for that matter, only to find out that its a "bubuli" (a relative of the lizards), inubos ang pa-in ko at nabali pa ang pamingwit ko....i need to make another...

nevertheless, i would love all children to experience this joy, i want my future children to experience these things, because it will give them joy that cannot be bought or borrowed from someone....its a once in a lifetime scenario that should not be missed, that should not be edited, that should not be deleted....its a pure joy.....dalisay na kaligayahan sa isang simpleng batang may simpleng kamusmusan...

ikaw anung kwento mo...

my memories of "maalaala mo kaya"

isa sa mga paborito kung panuorin sa telebisyon ay ang maalaala mo kaya (mmk), if my calculations are correct, it was in 1992 that it started airing via abs-cbn hosted by beauty queen, actress, producer and network executive charo santos-concio.

maraming dahilan ang dapat mabanggit kung bakit ito ay aking gustung-gustong pinapanuod.una, the stories are very true, dramatic and a real depiction of the slice of life; second, the artist portraying the role, i would say is "swak" to the story and the reason the acting is very appropriate to the role and lastly, the technical aspects are things should not be missed out.

isa sa mga malinaw na episode ng mmk ay matagal nang panahon, sa katagalan ay hindi ko na matandaan kung anung taon ito lumabas sa telebisyon. but the title, the story and the actors are very fresh to me, seems like the freshness of its 2010 recent edition.

the title was "matchbox", isang laruan, kotse-kotsehan sa madaling salita. it starred two of the contemporary teen stars of the 90's, jigo garcia and smokey manaloto. the very reason why it remained to me is because of the lesson and the story itself, is about friendship. it has opened my mind on the concept and realities of friendship.

for 18 years, whenever i had the time to watch it, it has never failed me. it has never failed to make me cry, laugh, to be thankful for, to hope and to be feel blessed. i remember my retorika teacher in feu, once commented on the show, he said that one of the good things about mmk is the closing message of charo santos, idinidiin nito ang mensahe ng episode and yes, i certainly agree.

for recent years that i have been watching it, what makes it more exciting is the guessing of the title in the end, a one word title that will describe the whole episode, sometimes its a phrase but many times its a single word. tabo, saranngola, pocketbook, cellphone, etcetera, etcetera...
